About Andrew Johnson Bank

About Us

Serving the community of East Tennessee since 1979.

Andrew Johnson Bank was originally established as the City and County Bank of Greene County in a building on the northeast corner of Main and Church Streets in the heart of downtown Greeneville in May 1975.

In March 1979, a group of Greeneville businessmen led by U.S. District Judge Tom Hull and Carl Brandon purchased majority control of the Bank.

On June 2, 1979, Bill Hickerson was elected the new President and CEO of City and County Bank of Greene County. Just a year later on August 7, 1980, a special stockholder’s meeting approved to change the Bank’s name to Andrew Johnson Bank. The Bank has enjoyed significant growth and prosperity and today ranks as the second largest bank in Greene County in terms of total deposits held in the county.

The Bank's first location outside of Greene County opened in Morristown in May 1996.  This office is located in the former Security Trust building on W. First North Street.

In June 2000, the Bank purchased the assets of Greeneville Insurance Agency. The Bank’s existing brokerage service was put under the management of the insurance agency, and through this subsidiary, Andrew Johnson Insurance and Investment Services, the Bank began offering a full array of insurance and brokerage services at its location at 913 Tusculum Blvd in Greeneville.  As of January 2016, these services were relocated to the Main Office.

In August 2001, Andrew Johnson Bank opened a loan production office (LPO) in Jonesborough on East Jackson Highway. With continuing success in that market, a building was constructed on the corner of 11-E (1550 E. Jackson Blvd.) and Headtown Road to house the Jonesborough Office. It opened for business in November 2005 as a full service branch.

The Bank purchased the historic Doughty Building in downtown Greeneville across the street from the Main Office to accommodate expansion. In February 2003, extensive renovations to the first floor were completed allowing the teller line and retail offices of the Main Office to move across the street into the newly remodeled building which would become the current Main Office. In November 2004, the operations department moved into the remodeled second floor of the Doughty Building. Soon after, the original Main Office was demolished to erect a drive-thru/ATM facility with adjoining offices. The drive-thru was opened the week of the 30-year anniversary celebration in May 2005. During 2007, approximately half of the third floor of the Main Office was renovated for additional office space.

In July 2009, the Bank opened its second location in Washington County, expanding into the Johnson City market with a full-service location at 3300 Brown’s Mill Road.  In early 2015, we purchased the former BOA building which is located at 2105 W. Mountcastle Drive; we relocated to this office in June.  This new location is a prime setting, just off of Roan Street and diretly in front of the Johnson City Mall.

The footprint of the Bank grew significantly in September 2009 when board approval allowed an LPO in Cleveland, TN to open. With the successful growth of the LPO, space was leased in downtown Cleveland and a full-service branch opened in July 2010 at 555. N. Ocoee Street.  In January 2014, the Bank made a significant investment by purchasing the building and expanding our retail operation.

Committed leadership and stability are major strengths of the Bank. Bill Hickerson has been CEO and President for 37 years and Paul Hite, former Chairman of the Board, served for 22. In June 2007, Hite passed the gavel to one of the Bank’s major shareholders and board leaders Paige Hull.

Today the Bank remains independently owned and boasts assets in excess of $330 million with offices located in Greene, Hamblen, Washington, and Bradley Counties. Other expansions in these and other markets are under consideration.
